When does the H1 period starts

Dear friends

My H1 visa is stamp to expire in Oct 2006, but I first came to the US in June 2001. my main question is does the visa starts to count down when I get into the US or is it when the first approval was made.
I would like to change jobs now, but I'am scared that no other company would want to employ me if there is not a lot of time left on my H1.
Please any advice will be good as I need to plan ahead.
 
If there was a sizeable gap between when your visa was approved and when you came to the US, you could reclaim that period....but please consult an attorney about that. Also, any time that you sepnt outside of the US (on vacation) during your H1B period can be reclaimed. Again, please consult an attorney about this.
