When do They take Your Alien Card?

At the oath ceremony so that you can still travel out of the country between interview and oath.

Just before the oath ceremony.

You surrender your 'green card', take the oath, and then walk out with the certificate of naturalization.

Does your DO have same day oath? Perhaps you should find from other threads on this forum. You may be the only person who may be hoping to not have a same day oath here ;-)
