What's wrong with my case?

I'm F1 Visa Student and got married in June 2004; applied I485 in August and took fingerprint in September 2004. We had interview on March 8 2005. During the interview, the interviewer took my fingerprint again, and took out my I-94 but at the time, he told us that my birth cerfiticate's copy was not in his file so he wanted to resubmit it. He did not stamp my passport or anything. Two week later, i got a notice that they recieved my the birth cerfiticate's copy. Since then, we haven't heard anything from INS so I went to check our case's status at the USCIS office (San Jose) last friday. An officer told me that our case was still pending and waiting for background check from FBI. I called FBI at (304)625 5590 but they sent the result back to INS on the same day (September 17 2004 - they're having a electronic system, no longer sending mail notice) of my fingerprint-taking. Here are my questions, please help:

1. What should we do now? Is something bad going on?
2. How long will it take for an approval? I heard many cases was still pending more than 1 year or so. Why do some cases get approval or stamp the same day or within 3 months?
3. I'm going to transfer to University soon but do not know what my current status is. The UC application has only two option: F1 Student or Permanent Resident. Is there anyone who has a similar case as mine?

-------------- let your lawyer write to USCIS where you did Interview or go to same CIS and ask the status, you can inform them that officer at that time took I-94 and you are without I-94

2. How long will it take for an approval? I heard many cases was still pending more than 1 year or so.
------------- Name check can take time
Why do some cases get approval or stamp the same day or within 3 months?
---------- every case is diffrent
3. I'm going to transfer to University soon but do not know what my current status is.

**** you can involve your congressman they can get update on your case

It is absurd to ask you who the congressman is but i do not know INDEED. We filed everything (I485,EAD,AP) by ourselves followed by the instruction and experiences from many people in this forum, hence without the help from lawyer.

1. How do we contact or get involve with CONGRESSMAN? We're living in San Jose.
2. In our case, the interviewer took my I-94, does it mean anything at all?
3. My EAD and AP will be expired in August 2005, should I reapply the new ones? (because i don't really need it but things are unforeseeable.) Anyway, should I? Will they affect my case?

Thank you!
