What's gonna happen at the POE?

Hi all,

I've posted a similar question sometime ago but I missed the thread.

I'm wondering what will happen at the port of entry which I arrive US by my immigrant visa. The embassy gave me a big envelope and asked me not to open it. I just need to pass that envelope to the immigration officer and then it's done? Anything I need to do by that time? How long will it take to finish the entry process at the POE?

And when and where should I apply my SSN and "activate" my greencard?

I would suggest you to go to DV 2010 AOS Only Forum and then ask there. May be you will be able to find someone who did CP and went through this process. But to me it should not be any problem. You GC should be activated at the POE and you need to apply for SSN as soon as you can! Thanks

AOS= Adjustment of Status : for those who are already in USA can choose either AOS or CP. AOS generally takes 3-4 months time however.
CP= Consular Processing: at the local embassy in home country

Hi,

May I know what is AOS and what is CP?

At the lines say to some one you are '1st time GC', they'll direct you.
At 1st officer, he'll do some finger printing, photos etc.
Then you go to another, who will do old fasion finger printing again!!
then only you are allowed to go collect your baggage.
Process can take any where from 30-90 mins.

Make sure you ask the airline crew that you need to go through 1st time GC process that will take time and to ask there help in securing your luggage.
At JFK this is not a big prob since all the processes are in one floor. But at some PoEs , luggage claim is at a different level.

Allow about 5-7 business days before you go to SS office to get your SS card.

Your physical (plastic) GC will come 2-4 weeks after entry and SS card 2-3 weeks after application.

Best !
