WASHINGTON: Rep. Joseph Crowley, (D-NY), co-chair of the Congressional Caucus on India and Indian Americans, in an address to the Asia Society Congressional Forum here on Oct. 7, said, “I think it is plain to see that Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf has not stopped support of cross-border terrorism or ceased support of terrorist activities in the region of Jammu-Kashmir. In fact, these attacks have been steadily increasing.”
He favored placing conditions on this $3 billion assistance package “to ensure that real progress is made on stopping not only terrorist infiltration across the line of control but also ceasing all Pakistani proliferation activities.”
“The United States must do more to assist India in its own war against terrorism,” he said.
Crowley, who met visiting Pakistani Prime Minister Mir Zaffarulah Khan Jamali to discuss this issue, said the prime minister had little reassurances to offer in this area.
“The latest reports I have seen state that roughly 4,000 Islamic terrorists are camped in the Pakistani controlled region of Kashmir and a significant number are poised to strike targets inside India,” he said.
Rep. Crowley applauded the formation of the closer military ties between India and the U.S., hoping that Washington would approve the sale of the defensive PAC-3 missile system to India.
Crowley said he was confident that India would be among the first of the U.S. allies to offer assistance after the Security Council had backed the role and objective of the Bush administration in rebuilding and stabilizing Iraq.
