What to do with an old I-94?

Ok, here are my facts.

I have a TN expiring sometime in 2008. I recently resigned for that job, with my official last day being this Friday. I start a new job in one week and will be applying for a new TN. I have a week in between - I plan to go to U.S. to look for an apartment and all other necessary stuff (i.e. furnish, get cell phone, get phone line, cable, etc...). I plan to go sometime this weekend and come back mid-week. Then I plan to go and apply for my TN on Saturday before my new work start date.

My questions:
(1) What do I do with my current I-94? Must I turn it in when I cross the first time? or can I just turn it in when I apply for my TN?
(2) Would it be OK to apply for TN this weekend or is it prudent to wait until the Saturday before my start date?
(3) I also have a Nexus card. Does anyone know how a new TN will affect my Nexus access?

Thank you in advance for all your inputs.

Lana

(1) since you cannot use it to enter US, I would remove any suspicion and hand it in the next time I'm crossing. The proper course, as indicated on the I-94 itself, would have been to give it to Cdn authorities when you left US. Now, you might face extra scrutiny, especially on the matter of where you now live, given you had a previous TN, and given that you are going to US to establish a home. They may insiste that you enter on a new TN, so you might want to already have TN paperwork ready. To enter asa tourist, you need to have clear Cdn residential ties, which you may not have right now.
2. You should try. See 1.
3. Given that your status is changed, I would not enter using nexus until I had re-established my TN status.

Thanks Nelson,

Here are more facts of my situation that may change your answer.

Although I've been on TN for the past 2 years, I never was a resdient of U.S. Typically I left Canada on Sunday and came back for the weekend. Some weeks, I worked in and never left Canada. While I was still in Canada, I decided to resign as of end of month. So, I never really had an opportunity to turn in my I-94.

So next time I cross the border, I should turn in my I-94 to the U.S. customs officer? Or can I keep it until I apply for a new TN?

The best thing to do would be to mail it to USCIS.

Otherwise, you should definitely hand it in at the border, being prepared to get another TN at that time. I would not keep it on my person while crossing, as it is invalid, and could raise suspicion.
