What need to be done after I-485 approval? HR and SSN issues

Hi, friends,

I have following questions:

(1) After GC approved, I showed the stamp on passport to the HR. I am not sure whether I need to show them the plastic card when I get it?

(2) Whether I need request another SSN letter? I noticed that my current SSN letter has "work under INS authorization" kind of thing on that, do I need to change? If it is needed, where should I contact?

(3) What else need to be done after GC approved?

1. You need to file a new I-9, there is no need to do anything after the plastic card. You are now a LPR
2. You don't really need a new SS Card, the one you have is fine, but some people have reported that sometimes employers are put off by the "work under ...", if you care about it, you can step to your nearest SS office and take your passport with your to order a new card without the qualifciation.
3. Throw a big party for all the IP.com participants and not stop smiling for 30 days atleast.
 
No offense but on line verifiction of SS for work authorization by employer company is not cause enough to change ss information, simply because while filing out the I9 you will need to show documents from group A, which precludes any social security information.

The real reason would be in cases like home loans, back ground checks etc. where there is no I9 to back up the status check.
 
After you get the stamp you fill out an I9 because you're now a permenant resident. After you get the plastic you fill out another I9 because you're expiry date has changed from a year after stamping to 10 years after you were granted residency. So, print out a whole bunch of I9's and enjoy yourself ;-)

I got my I-485 approved recently and am currently waiting for my card to arrive. I was going to report my status change to HR upon arrival of the card.

I now realized that I had never filed updated I-9 for EAD when my H1-B (6-years) expired because nobody asked/informed me to do so. Well, I had never had chance to show my EAD card to anybody before I gave it to the officer at my passport stamping.

Q 1) Would I possibly be penalized for not reporting about the duration (approx. 6 months) I was working under EAD?

I have been working for this same company for 7 years, and it seems like even HR had forgotten that I did not have permanent resident status yet. I guess they never ask me the question, "So, what's going on with your green card application?" :D

Q 2) Am I really OBLIGATED to report to HR my appoval? (It's not that I don't want to tell them. Just that I didn't know I needed to update I-9 on every status change until today.)

I found it's interesting... that I always had a proof to prove my "legal status," but my company currently doesn't have a proof to say this employee (me) is working with a legal document. :rolleyes:

1. I9 is your employer's responsibility, to maintain records. They need an I9 to ensure that they are not hiring illegal immigrants. It is ridiculous that your HR did not catch the expiry of your H1. They should have notified your immediately to prove status. Hopefully you have been proactive and made copies of your EAD/H1 documents, in case asked to prove status for the disputed period, you should be able to furnish documents to back up your case.

2. Technically you are not obligated, but people normally volunteer to do so just to get HR off their backs, in your case that doesn't seem the problem. Someone is going to get into trouble for not following up on your case. But for the heck of it, you might want to file a new I9. Just to prevent your name being dragged into any future complications.
 
If a person still did'nt get his / her plastic card and the stamping on the passport has expired,would that mean that the person necessarily has to update the passport stamping for I9 purposes?
 
How do I apply for my Son's SSN?

Hi Guys,

We got approved on 21st July, PP stamping for all of us at SFO on 26th July.

My son is 13 years of age. Do I apply for SSN Card the way we applied for?

Gurus, need advice.

I agree.
I believe that my I-9 in the company cabinet says, "I am an alien authrozed to work until March 2001 (This is the time my 1st H1B had expired)," provided that they still keep my I-9, of course. :D

I guess I can do myself & my employer a bit of favor. When I get my plastic card, I'm going to submit a new I-9 (already filled out) along with:
- a copy of my 1st H1B stamp
- a copy of my 2nd H1B stamp
- a copy of my EAD card receipt

What's the point of providing these docs? If you are GC holder, your H1, EAD documents are history. Save them as "history", not with I-9.

Agreed! Usually you don't provide copies of any documents. The last few times I have submitted my I-9 all I had to do was show the original document. The moron at HR was probably supposed to photocopy it, but dint. So I guess it isn't that important.

But if you had to submit something I would stop after a copy of the Plastic GC.
