What name should I use on Citizenship Application

Hi All,

At my Birth my name was A B C. When I got my Indian passport, I saw that my last name is not there. I came to USA and lived with A B until I got the green card. Which was my first name and Middle name. After I got the green card, I went to local probate court here in US and add my last name based on my birth certificate. So court gave me a certificate saying that my new name is A B C and formerly known as A B. Subsequently I used my new name as A B C in my employment, Driver's license, Social Security etc. I am known as A B C everywhere except in Green card and Passport. I did not change my name in Green card and Passport, because changing name would have been a big thing atleast in passport.

Now I am eligible to file for citizenship. What name should I use on N-400 form. Should I use the name as A B (as in green card and passport) or should I use my full name as A B C.

Any suggestion is welcome.
 
You should use name A B C on your application since you have court order for your new name unless they have asked you "Name as on GC..." I had my maiden name on my GC but when I filed N400, I wrote my new name.
 
If I use my new name, would it be a problem at the time of citizenship interview, when officer looks at my Indian passport or Green card.

Please help.
 
Not at all. Because you will have a Court Order issued by AMERICAN COURT with you as a proof of your name change. If you want to change your name for INS record too then on N400 they ask you to fill out a portion. You fill that out with your A B C then you will have your new A B C name on your Citizenship certificate. Not to worry at all.

Nothing to worry about. You have a court document that documents your name change. However when you fill out the N-400, use your new name "A B C", but you need to mention any other names used as "A B", and probably include a certified copy of your name change certificate with your application. Good luck.
 
N-400, page 1:
1. Write your name: "ABC"
2. Write your name exactly as it appear on the GK: "AB"

So they gave you the opportunity to show that GK has old name.
Moreover attach the name change certificate with explanations.
