What is the rule about staying on B-2

my mom just got 10-year Multiple entry B-2 visa. Ihave two questions:

- I heard that total time she can stay in U.S during her visa validation period is just 1 year . Is true? if we plan 6 months stay periods it means she can come in only twice?

- Another question is her current passport (with visa she just got) expires next year. It means she needs to reapply for a visa after chenging the passport or there is another procedure for this situation?

- Total time she can stay in the US is determined at the point of entry by the expiration date stamped on her I-94. This time could also be extended by filing form I-539 with USCIS and by USCIS approving such extension of stay request.

- No, she does not need to apply for visa after changing passport but she would need to carry both old and new passports.
 
Thank you. It is clear about new passport rule.

But I can't understand yet about period of time she can stay.
I know that probably she can't stay longer than 6 months ( as will show up on her migration card)at once, and it is not the issue- the question is her combined time staying in U.S during validation visa period(10 years) must not exceed 1 year. is it right? Or there is no rule about this and it is different for everybody. I just heard it from my friends
 
she can visit as many times and as long as allowed in the 10 yr period. there is no rule specifying total 12 months in a period of 10 years. sounds really silly does it not.

The idea is that she spends more time in home country than here.

So try not to file extensions if you can avoid it or frequent trips. Have a reasonable stay in home country in between the trips. and enjoy the ten year visa.

next time when someone says a weird thing like this ask them for the source.
