what is the difference in "petitioner" and "applicant"

Could any one explain the difference between
"petitioner" and "applicant." Are they
diffrent or same?

Petitioner is the person who is filing(applying) the petition for the petitioner(you).

In case of I140 Employer is petitioner and you are the applicant. (Though in case of EB2-NIW self
petitioned case the applicant is the petitioner too).
In I485 the applicant and the petitioner are the same (you).
