What is email ?

Sorry, it's stupid question.
I see people talking about emails regarding their application stautus.
Does USCIS send emails to applicants to let them know the status ?
How can I get that email ?
I'm still waiting for plastic card, so....it would be nice if I knew that
my card is mailed.
