Now that many of us have filed or will very soon be filing our I-485, what are the next steps to be expected? My lawyer has not updated me on any of these issues in the past and I have learnt most from this website.
Can some one post the next steps/ processing times etc and also explain the short abbreviations?
My understanding:

File I-485/ I-140
Receipt notice (anticipated times posted on 08/03/07)- will be updated
Finger Printing (FP) notice
?FBI check

(What are LUDS/ INFOPASS???- some one explain please)

Notice to approve (hopefully soon)

First thing I would do is to keep checking my bank account whether the service center encashed the check. If this is a checking account, you will get the case number (printed at the back of your check), through which you can track your case it in USCIS website.

Fingerprinting notice after I-485

I am one of June 29th filers and recently received the receipt notice. How much time does it usually take to get fingerprinting notice?

There isn't anything else you necessarily have to do except wait. You can apply for EAD to work and Advance Parole to travel, but those are optional unless your H1/L1 is expiring.

LUD = Last Updated Date. Google for USCIS Case status online and register your case there. Also Google for Infopass.

Approval anytime soon is not realistic. It is not impossible, as there are maybe some 0.1% of people who get approved in 2 months, but the I-485 approval takes at least a year or two for most people. What is your EB category and priority date? If you are in EB3 and from India or China there is no way you will be approved before next year summer, unless your priority date is very old (like 2002 or before).

Usually within 1 or 2 months. But with the flood of I-485 applicants this summer, it may take longer for some people.

I have another concern, I read it online that it takes about 90 days for EAD and AP. When does the count down begin?

Does it start:
1. From the date of receipt notice ?
2. Or it starts after FP is done?
3. It is worked on simultaneously?

Thank you all.

90 days since the EAD/AP application was received by USCIS. FP has nothing to do with it. But with the recent flood of applications it will take longer for some people.

Jackolantern,

Thank you for helping us around here even after you have your GCs. I hope you are enjoying the freedom and the feeling.

Appreciate if you or anyone here under these threads could answer my couple of questions.

Are these 'Approval Notices' (whether for EAD/AP or AOS) sent by the USCIS under 'registered' post meaning will they need a signature from the recipient?

Are these usually sent by USPS?

The reason I am concerned about the delivery or the non-delivery is that we will be gone for a couple of days and I do not want the mail to be returned to USCIS.

Thanks - IE

Currently they are sent by regular postal mail.

I remember reading somewhere that after the implementation of the new fees they plan to send some documents (like the physical EAD or GC cards) by 2-day courier with tracking. I don't know how true that is or when they will implement it. However if they do that and you are not there to receive it, the delivery person will leave a note on your door and you would have the option to pick it up at the post office or Fedex or UPS location.

You can look up the Standard Operating Procedures of USCIS posted by Rajiv in I-485 Information forum.

Thanks Jackolantern

Thank you Jackolantern!

Based on your response, I am assuming I will receive both the EAD cards and EAD approval notice through regular USPS mail.

Please see the progress in my signature and let me know if you think there is anything abnormal, especially for the EAD dates of 'Card Production Ordered' (08/02/07) - LUD on EAD (08/03/07 & 08/06/07) - 'Approval Notice' for EAD (08/06/07).

Thanks once again.

Sincerely - IE

Did not think appropriate to start a new thread for this question. Thought I just add this one to my chain of doubts :) Hope its ok.

How many days do I have between Fingerprinting Notice and FP appointment? Also someone mentioned something about grace period.

Thanks again.
