What is a Transfer Case?

Can someone shed light on what exactly a "Case Transferred to CITY XX" is? For many of us new to this, there is a lot of discussion pertaining to transfers, but hardly anything to indicate what exactly this is, what this process entails, and drawbacks, advantages if any in the I485 process.
