one is laid off, issued an RFE, but could not find a job in the required period(3 months). So his I485 will be denied and he had to leave the country? He could not change to non-immigrant visa like F1 or B1, because he had intension of immigration before.

Found out there were a few posts on this board asking for help during the last few months. Not sure whether they got jobs and got GC approved now.

Good luck to everyone still waiting. But with ecnomny this bad, anything can happen, sigh.... Anyone know how to deal with the worse scenario?

I guess almost everbody on this board is afraid of the worst case scenario that you described. My philoshophie is this...
1) Work your ass off at your present company (in my case this is especially tough, because my boss is a total !@$@#%$. For example, I had to work over thanksgiving).
2) If you are on an H1B waiting for your I-485 approval then definitely get an EAD card as well (even if you don't use it, it is important to have one so that you can join a new company without having them to transfer your H1, which is a lot of paperwork).
3) Have your resume ready.
4) Search the internet for jobs (of course not while you are at work) and get in touch with headhunters. If you print your resume at work then make sure that you don't forget a copy at the printer (happened to a colleague of mine - he is history now).

the job must be a permnent - W2 or can be contract - W2 or contract -1099 ?
