What happens when you get laid off on a J-1, how many days do you have to leave the country? Also is it possible to get another J1 if one were to find work?

You have 30 days. If you find another one sponsor you, he can apply during that time (30 days) for your transfer till the maximum time allowed for that J for example 3 years in resaerch could be extended to 5 years maximum. After 30 days you will be out of status and can not transfer from the inside of the US.
