What hapeens to my current B1 after My J1 expires?

I have a few questions..

1-I intend to take a J1 for research for a year.what happens to my current B1/b2 ( 5 year multiple) when my J1 expires, lets say it expires may 2009. after that will I be able to visit US on my B1.

2-I intend to get my visa converted from US, so what will my status be during this period. My I 94 expires in a month.
