What can you do after GREEN CARD!

What you can do after getting your GREEN CARD. If one has already well job and do not want to quit present job.

The reason for this question is that I do not see any difference after getting green card I am working same place and I am making same money. There is nothing has been changed I in my life I was just hoping to get some more idea and new thing we can do in this country. I hope there are some Guru’s out there who are successful people.

Please share with your advice!
 
here is a suggestion.

I guess you have to return the green card to INS then, so you don't have any thing to whine about. Life will be perfect for you.
 
Wooo, where to start?

With a Green Card, you become a Lawful Permanent Resident (LPR). LPRs and Citizens are the only two classes of people who have the right to live permanently in the USA. Everyone else has to leave when their visa expires.

If you lose your job, you won't get deported. :)

LPRs can claim Social Security benefits, Medicare and Disability. You can also claim State Unemployment Benefits. Non-resident visa holders (H1, etc) can't do that.

LPRs can apply for Credit and Mortgages (strictly speaking, you must be an LPR or Citizen to apply for credit, but most credit card companies run on a 'don't ask, don't tell' basis). Some mortgage companies will give mortgages to non-resident aliens (H1 holders, etc), but most don't.

Depending on the state you live in, LPRs can own firearms. :) Federal law forbids non-resident Aliens from owning guns.
 
Well, at least your future is secure in this country after getting your GC. You no longer have to worry about losing your job and returning to your home country. You can start your own consulting business on the side or have multiple jobs. During the dot com boom days having a GC didn't make much of a difference since jobs were in plenty and salaries were high. But in today's economic environment having a GC makes life a lot easier. You can claim unemployment benefits if you lose your job. My comparisons are between H1 and GC.
 
As BritGC said... With GC your life will not change any thing except you get some additional Benefits.
 
People who are great can do in this country with visitor visa. People who are not great can't do anything even if they have citizenship.
So do not wait for GC. Start your action plan now!.
 
Your spouse also gets the same freedom as you do and can work for any employer or start a small enterprise. Most importantly you get to think and plan things beyond the green card. More options and less constraints.
 
This is one of the dumbest question I have heard in a while.

putti, you should have asked this question before applying for GC. I guess you unnecessarily wasted so much of money and energy for nothing.
 
Start thinking about citizenship

And then maybe... Start worrying about dual citizenship ;)

For now, just enjoy the feeling of being a 'Green Card Holder' :)
 
If you are in a good job, you will not see any benefit in near future but as a lot of folks have said, you can enjoy more carefree life here. Not so much job worries in future etc etc..

No fingerprinting, pictures taken while entrying US from foreign visit :) . Plan trip to you hometown. No worries about AP etc..

Buy a good house.

Splurge on some big ticket items ...

I agree. Except i got 5% increment after getting GC. No other change.

I think one thing you can do is get the GreenCard view of the Niagara Fall(from the Canadian side).

Not having it is a major major problem.
