Hi Dudes,

Taking a step back from the proceedural aspects,
what are the benefits of being a GC holder.

I know the following, is there anything else:

a) Now use the Citizen or GC queue at the airport!
b) Can be unemployed and don\'t need to leave country
c) Can stay indefinitely in the U.S. so long as it is your
   permanent residence.
d) Can collect unemployment benefits
e) Eligible to be drafted in the army reserves (this is not a benefit)!

Can buy weapons and then can apply for a license to
carry a concealed one (at least in a state I have been
to, laws clearly say only citizens and PR can have a license
to carry concealed weapons). I don\'t know any federal laws
or regulation on this issue.

Here are few more !!

* You can do as many jobs as you wish
* You can start your own company or business ! You no longer have to do the same type of job !!
* For visiting Canada you no longer have to get the tourist VISA, so it is lot more easier now to view Niagra Falls from the Canadian side :)
* I\'m sure its lot more easier to travel to Europe, e.g. getting the VISA etc. I don\'t know if there are any other priviledges to PR holders or citizens of US in Europe or Canada. Somebody else who is more knowledgeable can throw more light on this !!
* Also if for some reason, you want to get PR of any other country, I think process is very fast for PR of US, though I don\'t know how many of PRs would want to do that !!

I\'m sure this list is bigger than this one !!

Guys please share if you know any other benefits of GC.

thanks and enjoy these benefits !!

One more...

You will save time to add better quality to your personal life by not visiting Mr. Khanna\'s site as frequently as in the past.

Pump,

I\'m not sure of that. This site is kind of addictive.
Have you visited the CSC 485 site recently?

There are funds being collected to send people to doctors
Wars over dosas
Message from people\'s parents apologizing for their creation ...

It\'s great entertainment

The carrybag becomes smaller as it has to hold only the passport + GC for out of country visits.
Dont have to spend time infront of the copier machines, making copies of H1 papers for travel outside the country.

Federal Aid for Education

You can apply for FAFSA aid for studies.
Don\'t need to change to F1 to pursue further studies.
Can get better mortgage rates, options with more banks.
Can pay in-state tuition fees where eligible.

you and your family members can pay in state tuition without being a PR.

H1B or H4 will be enough for in state tuitions. At least we did it in NY state.

No difference in travelling to Europe, still need a visa, a reason to go, a job and a bank statement; if you want to become a PR of another country, they couldn\'t care less about your US Green Card, your passport is what matters. Plus if you decide to immigrate elsewhere you\'ll lose your status here.

You have to be residing in the state for one year, to be eligible for \'in state\' tution fee,

If you are on H1 or H4,
but on PR, there shouldn\'t be any such restriction.

Thanks Guys

Other benefits include:

a) You can apply for lots of jobs that require PR or Citzenship only
   (true of government jobs)

b) You can get an, albiet limited, security clearance.

Keep the benefits rolling in and I\'ll compile them and
put them into a FAQ of some sort.

Tax benefit

You can do some private work on the side (besides your job) and claim tax benefits for home office use, car lease etc etc.

Suffered from not being a PR, I surely know better than many how precious it is being one.

Lost job in 1999 on H1B. Got an offer right away but could not go because INS required that you can only join the company after the approval of trasfering H1B at that time.

Had to go back to school and switched back to F1.

Now comes the good part:

Got paid for unemployment benefits even I filled in ALL the correct (true) info ($1500/month) while going to school.

Paid $13000 tuition for 9 months before landing another job with coop.

The state is asking me to pay back the UNEMPLOYMENT PAY: would have been $9000.

Now is the sum of the total loss of NOT being a PR:

tuition: $13000+
Salary for 9+ months (I would go for that offer if I could go to that job) or $9000 unemployment benefits whichever is higher (*_*).

What a relief now, Sigh!

Best of luck guys and enjoy the freedom.
