What are the issues with delays in Naturalization process?

Just pondering on this topic over a weekend.

Seems like a lot of people are frustrated with delays in N-400 processing esp with "Name check" delays. I completely understand this can be very frustrating and I'm a bit worried myself that which path my own application will go - hopefully it is smooth but nothing is in our hands when it comes to USCIS.

That said, A few questions. What are the issues with delays in Naturalization process?

When the I-485 (Green card) process used to get stuck, people are very hassled becos many things are cumbersome without a green card. While Naturalization does give many more benefits, do people still worry a lot if the N-400 process is delayed? Doesn't green card give them "most" of the benefits anyways, so they can still wait out the N-400 process?

Is there some reason why people are in a hurry to get over with N-400 other than the fact that waiting is painful in and of itself?

(I do see a certain # of people who are waiting for citizenship so they can sponsor their fiance for green card etc. Understandably this is a more urgent case).

Its best if all of us get through this process successfully in timely fashion.

By the way, here are a few problems I see if things get delayed:

1. TRAVEL: you are always on the lookout for FP letter, Interview letter, Oath letter etc etc. So, TRAVEL becomes a hassle if you need to go for 3 weeks or so.

2. RE-LOCATION: Difficult to relocate to a different state while N-400 is pending.

Any other things?
Lets wish each other success for a favorable and timely adjudication of our application. Good luck!

Yes. There is a reason for the hurry...actually several:

If you use google to find news related articles you may find that many people:

1) have been legal PRs for a long time but never felt compelled to do this until

2) congress almost passed what would be considered beneficial immigration laws that would benefit many people here to become legal and have a path to citizenship

3) treatment as second class person because of lack of citizenship

4) there are way more social benefits and job security to those who have citizenship

5) right to avoid deportation (it's easier to get deported if you are a PR); it's almost impossible to deport or revoke citizenship (if you remain lawful!)

6) right to vote (I myself look forward to this); in my opinion, your most important duty as a citizen is to take part in your government

7) many people feel were disenfranchised in the last election (including citizens) and were kept from voting

In general, there is more security if you are a full fledged citizen. Like I said before the US is in my opinion the best country in the world, but it can be better. And this is why I want citizenship. I want to improve things.

Look in google for articles. I'm certain you wil find many. And I'm sure many will say there are more opportuniities for individuals and their families and children with citizenship.

And the increase in fees actually helped to get this started along with the polarizing debate on immigration.

One of the main reasons people get frustrated with the namecheck delays is because it significantly delays their ability to sponsor spouses, children and other immediate relatives for LPR.

I don't have any one to sponsor and whereas it is less than a month since my finger printing, I would definitely feel frustrated and upset if my citizenship process was stuck in name check. I have never had any criminal issues (not even a speeding fine) so naturally I would be frustrated if I am stuck in name check. The worst part of all of this is that FBI name check department does not have any provision for public contact and USCIS does not expedite and the politicians are scared of doing anything about it, just in case..

All one can do is to sue USCIS after waiting a year or more, and whining on this board:)

I am fortunate to have my N-400 application running smoothly. Although there would be no major inconvenience if my application got delayed, my wife and I thought the best thing to do before proceeding with international adoption was for me to apply for US citizenship since some countries allow adoption only when both adoptive parents are US citizens.

Stiff competition with illegals for the government/USCIS's attention and resources. The latest developments show clearly enough, that we, legal immigrants, will be kicked off straight to the end of line if it comes to processing illegals, natz-related or not. Politicians don't seem to understand that state's resources are not sufficient even now, backlogs are years-long in even simplest cases, and growing. Would it take FBI additional 12 years to clear my name check, right after they're done with 12,000,000.00 name checks for illegals?

Another consideration is that current name check procedure does nothing for national security.

Has anybody seen any stats on how many terrorists were caught in the name check net? name check trap, I should say? Name check black hole? Obvious meaningless of years of delay is very frustrating.

I don't know if any one noticed the last bill. For the Z visa the bill said something like all security checks must be "ordered" but not completed for issue of Z visas. Most of the politicians are dealing with letters from constituents for delays in name checks, so they will not want to have 12 million illegals stuck in that black hole.

All the democratic politicians in the senate (led by Durbin, Kennedy, Diane Fienstein etc) dispalyed a compulsive behavior of favoring anything to do with illegals and at the same time a hate for the "better off" legal immigrants. It has ensured that most of the legal immigrants (particularly those who are stuck in retrogession) and saw the debates in the senate will never vote for Democrats. Thank God for the republicans, otherwise the whole USCIS processing would have been swamped and the waiting period for processing N-400 application would have become over 18 months!

Diane Feinstein who is well funded by large agribusiness in CA has not lost time in trying to introduce the AgJobs and the Dream Act (legalizing illegals who landed in the US before they turned 16 and are willing to join the army or go to college) as add-ons to other bills.

The delay is created by lazy agency workers. If they worked a little faster then the backups would probably ease a little.

Brb2, the majority of the illegals working in Calif farms don't want to live here, they are seasonal workers who want to return to Mex after the harvest. So your understanding of the process is all wrong. They want GCs to travel between countries. If you think the gop is in favor of people like you and me, you must be in some fantasy world.
There is no simple way to clean up the mess, unless Haliburton can come up with a plan. Then we can probably give them a zillion $ no bid contract.

SKILL BILL is a good example of the republicans views. Cornyn introduced it this failed attempt and before that BrownBack. I have personally watched the immigration debates and also the proceedings of the senate judiciary committee and have formed my opinion based on directly watching the proceedings and not by reading the papers or the TV shows where short clips are showed.
Most educated legal immigrants (which would probably be the majority on this forum) are in income groups much above the median income and the Democrats will never look after this group, it will be the republicans who will push for tax cuts etc for this group.
