What are AVM and RFE??

This is the first time. Please help me with some naive questions. I saw a lot people talked about AVM and RFE, what are they? How to check AVM (it sounds important.)
My I-485 has been pending for quite some time. Before, I let my lawyer handle everything. Now I\'d like to check myself.

AVM is automated voice message

- a facility by which you can know the status of your applicationfrom INS. RFE is request for additional evidence - a request letter from INS seeking additional material or show cause why the application cannot be rejected. Hope that helps
 
Is it normal to get a REF notice

I think I submit all the materials. FP checked with FBI, Employment Verification Letter. What is the percent of people who get REF notice?
