What about Kids with Dual Citizenship ?

2 of my children have dual citizenship. My Husband is US Citizen was stationed in my Homecountry when we married and had 2 children there. They both hold 2 Birthcertificates. 1 from germany, 1 from the US Consulate. When they were first born we were told that when they are 18 years old they would have to decide what nationality they want to be pretty much.

So if I become a citizen here soon and my Husband is born a US Citizen can we change their status sooner or still have to wait until they are 18 years old ?

I don't know the nationality laws of Germany, but from the point of view of the U.S. the U.S. doesn't care about any choice, they are U.S. citizens and will continue to be after 18, unless I'm missing something. Perhaps your homecountry asks for this decision, but not the U.S. So there is no connection to your citizenship and no need to do anything now with respect to the U.S. citizenship as far as I can see. Who knows, the laws of Germany might change in the future and allow dual citizenship, you should start lobbying for that ;) You should write a letter to Angela Merkel showing them how generous the U.S. is with respect to immigration and citizenship compared to Germany and to do something to improve this situation and to support Germans living abroad with dual citizenship law. Perhaps also to open up and make it easier for foreigners to obtain German citizenship.

My understanding is that right now, Germany doesn't allow dual citizenship, but that it under review. If I were you, I would wait and see what happens - maybe by the time your kids reach 18, they won't have to face the problem. There are way more advantages to keeping dual natz, especially something with as much flexibility as a European passport.

Why make the choice for them sooner if neither country is forcing a choice until they are 18? When they're 18 they can decide. Or may not have to decide, if Germany allows dual citizenship by then.
