Went to Social Security Office today

Today I went to social security office during my lunchtime and applied for a new social security card (I was F-1 and used to have one with "Work only with INS authorization" printed)

I was called in about 15-20 mins which was much quicker than I thought. I brought my old social security card, green card and passport. She didn't need my passport. She said my new ssc will show only my middle initial instead of the whole middle name 'coz it has to match the name on my green card. After inputing all my info into system, the officer handed me a letter saying the new ssc will arrive in 2 weeks. She also kept my old ssc and said they need to destroy it.

In n out within 30 mins. Overall it was a great experience. :)

Can I change my SSC with my stamped passport?
I don't have the actual green card,what do u think?

It would be difficult with your expired passport. I think you should first wait for your GC, renew your passport and then go for your SSN.

You can still try the SSN office at this point and see if it flys by.

Yes you can forex_dealer. That stamp, while valid, is just as good as a green card in most cases.

The expired passport would only be a problem for identification purposes right Ari?

The stamp is still just as good, just like a visitor visa is good for entry even if the passport on which it was sealed is expired.

I dont think so. You cant really do much with an expired passport. Your passport should be valid for atleast 6 months at the time when you enter a country or apply for a visa.

No, that's not what I meant. I meant if your visa was on an expired passport, and you had another new passport, you can enter the US using your new passport and your valid visa on your expired passport.

Thus, the stamp is still valid for immigration purposes even if it is on an expired passport. For identification purposes, the stamp should be accompanied by an new unexpired passport.

So as long as forex can satisfy the identification requirements of the SSA, the stamp is good enough to prove permanent residence status. That's what it's for anyway, to act as a proof of a green card when the green card is not available.

Yeah, i agree. Both the passports should be carried.
