Weird when I check case online

Okay, out of curiousity, I entered what looked like my receipt number to me. I got it off of the check they cashed yesterday. Please keep in mind that I sent my application on 01/11/06, processed on 01/23/06. What is up with that:

Receipt Number: ESC*XXXXXXXXX

Application Type: N400, APPLICATION FOR NATURALIZATION

Current Status:

Your N400 APPLICATION FOR NATURALIZATION was received on December 15, 2005. We mailed you a receipt with information about processing. It is taking between 360 and 390 days for us to process this kind of case. We will mail you a decision as soon as processing is complete.

Maybe you entered the wrong number. Wait for your NOA to arrive then try again. It really doesn't matter what it says online. The date on the official notice is what matters.

On my check, they didn't write the whole number, only the last couple of digits. That threw me off, and I tried some of the other preprinted numbers, which didn't work. When I get the receipt notice, I was able to locate the receipt number on the check, and it was hand-written, and just the last couple of digits that weren't 0 (and no service center code, either.)

I agree with JoeF. same has been the case with many/most applicants. It is typically a 13 count number with the first four being ESC* or WSC*
or whatever. for the remaining 9 digits, please use 0 to prepone the 6-7 digits written on your check and use that. For 2 cases (my spouse and I), there was a 7 digit number on the check, which we had to prepend by 00 to make it a 9 digit number which I prepended by WSC* (since our cases are being processed by California Service Center). Hope this helps.

Thanks!! If I play around with the hand written numbers on my check, I get this:

The status for this Receipt Number cannot be found at this time in this automated system. Please check your case receipt number to see if it is correct. If you have questions or concerns about your case status, please contact the National Customer Service Center.

So it is either the wrong number, or it is not in their system yet. Actually, there are two hand written numbers on the front of the check:

One starts ESCxxxxxxx and right below it, follow five additional numbers. If I use the five additional numbers, add ESC and a few 0s to make it 13 characters, I get the message above. Well, I could wait until I get the actual receipt notice, but I am always interested in finding stuff out ahead of time. Yeah, not a very patient person here :)

I guess you are on the right track in using those nos this time since pretty much it would take some time to get the case to be shown online as is the case with all cases in all centers

good luck !!!
