Just heard the magic words today (8/7), must have been processed faster than I anticipated. When I called last Friday (8/2) the IIO couldn't (or didn't) give me a clue.

Approval: 8/7 (for both my wife and me)

My wife is visiting India now (she lost her father three weeks back). I wish I could let her stay there until end of Sept, so she and her family can comfort one another in this state of loss and pain. Does INS require we do our stamping right now (so I've to call her back) or allow us until the end of Sept? Thoughts?

My countless thanks to all members in this forum, we're an excellent team - your opinions and advises have made my wait not seem forever.

Hope to see tons of approvals in Aug!!

Updated 08/06/2002: IBIS Check Rule and Need for Prompt Passport Stamping of 485 Approval

AILA inquiry with the INS HQ indicates that once EB-485 is approved and people appear at the District Offices for passport stamping of temporary evidence of permanent residence and I-89 processing for plastic card production, the District Offices need IBIS check if 35 days have passed since the IBIS check undertaken by the Service Centers passed 35 days because the IBIS check is valid only for 35 days. When the stamping can not be granted because of such problem, the District Offices are instructed to give a temporary 30-day stamping so that people can continue to work and travel. It is thus strongly suggested that the people who receive the I-797 Approval Notices appear at the District Offices as quickly as possible to avoid such problem.

Sorry to hear about the family loss!

Definitely get your passport stamped.

Even with the IBIS check, all that can happen is that her passport stamping gets delayed for sometime. Not a big deal, except that one can never figure out how INS functions. So there is always that chance.

secondly, if its possible, maybe she can come back, get her passport stamped, and then maybe both of you can go to India (worry free) and spend time with her family (and yours). I am sure it will make theem feel really good.

Received Approval Notice on 8/10

Received my courtesy copy, original went to my attorney. Will talk to her tomorrow about my wife's stamping options.

I'm in favor of going together for stamping, lest the INS asks my wife for things she doesn't know about. She is considering preponing her return to US end of this month.

Received Green Card 9/24

(1) Had my passport stamped on Tue 8/20. I was late to reach INS Sacramento, about 9 am Mon 8/19, and was refused a token. They issue a limited no of tokens each day, better be in the line before 7 am, to be safe than sorry. Reached the next day at 6:15 am, got the token, and waited for about 3-and-half hours when my name was called. The officer was very nice to me, took my fingerprints, the passport, the approval notice and asked me to sit. She didn't ask for my AP or EAD documents though. I was called again after about 35~40 minutes and handed over the passport.

(2) My wife came back from India on 9/15 and I took her for stamping Thu 9/19. We reached early morning at about 5:45 am. It went very smoothly and were back home by 11:15 am. There was no problem because of her being away from the US for more than 2 months, she finally had her passport stamped almost a month-and-half after her I-485 was approved.

(3) I was surprised to receive my Green Card in mail Tue 9/24. The issue date was 9/20, just a month from my stamping date.
