voluntary work for non-profit while on H1B?

Hi,

I am on H1B visa and have been asked to join the board of a non-profit organization. All the work is voluntary, no monetary compensation involved.

Is that allowed?

if it's really voluntary without any reward and no productive work is involved, you can do that.

Thanks for the answer. I am not really sure what you mean by "no productive work"?

I don't get any material benefit from the work. However, I do use my analytical and people skills for the benefit of the organization. Would that be illegal?
