Voluntary departure ??

I'm sorry for the silly question, but what is voluntary departure from CIS? Does it mean they send you a letter saying "we want you to depart voluntarily" or something like that? Also if you apply for AoS (say, your PD is current by FB category) within the time they gave you for voluntary departure can you stay in US and still adjust?
 
Thank you, Canadian! It's still little confusing though. Does it come from court or CIS may send you the letter? I do remember someone's posts here about getting a letter from CIS about the voluntary departure. Is it a normal practice then?
