Hi,

I am a permanent resident and I have been out today from the US for 5 months;

I booked a ticket to re enter the US last week but it has been canceled due to the volcano;

Now I am worried If I will be able or not to re enter the US on time, within the 180 days as many airlines still cannot fly internationally;

What will happen if I cannot make on time?

Can I contact USCIS to explain?

Will my green card taken away at custom border when I re enter?

Please advice

thank you very mych

You are unlikely to have a problem. Keep your original itinerary to show officer if requested (and for future reference)a as proof of cancellation of travel plans beyond your control.

Have a safe trip!

If this long trip is an isolated one, you're unlikely to have a problem returning to the US.

However, if/when applying for citizenship you'll need to explain the 6 months absence. Make sure you keep the itinerary showing that you planned to return before 6 months, and if your citizenship interview will be years from now, keep newspaper clippings or web page printouts to remind the interviewer that this happened when the volcano eruption was causing flight cancellations.
