Hello:

I am a US Citizen and have been in the US for the past 14 years. My sister who is divorced last year and her daughter applied for their tourist visa in Chennai yesterday and I had sent all of the sponsor documents. Looks like the Consulate official didn't even look at the I-134 and other financial/supporting documents that I had sent. He just rejected after hearing that my sister is divorced and is working for a bank for the past 13 years. I'm not sure whether they rejected the visa because I'm a US citizen or because she is divorced. Not sure whether to reapply for the tourist visa again for her and her daughter. Anybody in a similar boat had success in Chennai? Please advice. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Your sister was most probably rejected because the interviewing consul was not convinced that she would return to India after her visit. She being divorced did not help. She having a US citizen brother did not help either. Her 13 years of employment with a local bank should have strengthened her case, but I guess other factors carried more weight. She should only re-apply when there have been significant changes in her situation.
I wish her good luck!!!
