I am on H1-B visa. My I-797 is expiring on July 1st 2007. My lawyers has applied for my H1-B extension and I got receipt a week ago. In order to bring my parents here on Visitor visa, is it essential to have I-797 or should my receipt I-129 should suffice.

Please advice. Thanks!

Neither your I-797 or I-129 receipt is essential for your parents to get a visitor visa. If that was the case, people without children is the US would never qualify for visit visas :)

That is correct, but I want to sponsor them and they cannot show enough finances to come here on their own. So in that case isn't it essential for me to show that I am on status which my receipt does. But I was wondering if US Consulate in Chennai will ask for approved I-797 or receipt is enough.

Thanks.

If it is an issue of finance, then the consulate would be more interested in your pay stub and tax return. You can attach your about to expire I-797 and I-129 along with those documents. Good luck to your folks.
