Visitor to Student Conversion

Has any one recently applied for conversion from visitor to student after 4/12/2002. I am permanent resident of US and I need to bring my brother from India who is alone there, he is currently staying with extended relative but not for long. I am his only guardian now after the death of our mother. He is only 15 years and just completed 10th grade, he has a visitor visa and he came here once for a month. Now I want to bring him for high school, I don\'t want him to take the risk of applying student visa from India because it seems next to impossible to get one with his age and he will loose his visitor visa as well.
Any idea, any other way, can I claim him as my dependent, or any humanitarian grounds. Has anyone been through similar situation.
Please help, I need you advice.
The worst case scenario is that I have to leave US and settle in back in India for him. He is too young to live alone.

Thanks a lot.

Some options

Your brother can enter US on a valid visitor visa and apply to high school and college.

Hope things work out but in case they dont then do consider some excellent boarding schools in India.

F-1 renewal

Hi,
I am a student on an F-1 visa that expires on June 30, 2002 (I just finished my undergraduate in Computer Science on June 5th, 2002). I have obtained the Optional practical training permit (EAD) that begins from August 1, 2002 until May 5th, 2002. I have a job offer from Handspring, Inc based in Mountainveiw, CA. I have a few questions.
1. Will I still be in status even after my F1 visa expires if I don\'t leave the US?
2. Is it possible to get my F1 extended/renewed within the US?
3. Given the current situation in India, would it be advisable to travel to India and apply for a visa renewal there? Or would it be better for me to not leave the US at all until I join Handspring?
Thank you very much,
Vijay

Thanks for the advice, I also need to know that how can I have my brother come here as a visitor with 6month stamp. He will need time to get admission to schools. Should I go back there and bring him with me or just have him come here by himself. Please advise.

Thanks!

Stamp at POE is at descretion of the INS officer

So there is no guarantee that you will get 6 months or not. If time is a constraint then you or your brother can apply for school ahead of applying for a visitor visa. Once his admission is confirmed he can travel, and if you like you can accompany him as a guardian since he is only 15 yr old.

Thank you for the advice. He already has visitor visa, it will be easier for him to do Toefl and SSAT exams here, that\'s why I want him to apply for admission from there. But I think now this is the safest option.

Thanks again.
