visiting home

greencarder

Registered Users (C)
i applied for asylum 12 years ago and my application was approved. After 11 years of waiting, I got my green car that -- was a year ago. During these years, conditions have drastically improved in my country and i think i can go home safely after refraining from doing that during this long period. Does anyone know if this would be a good move? will they take my green card away? please advise!

As a PR we are required to reside "permanently" in the US until we become naturalized citizens. Thus if you go back to your country to live, you will loose your green card.

You should get approval if you plan on being abroad for > 6 months. If you plan on going home for a vist for < 6 months, you do not need permission.

sadiq

p.s. I don't know if there are any restrictions on assylum based PRs.

Check asylum thread on this board. There are a large number of postings regarding asylees traveling home.

From reading the posts I gather that one should carefuly consider the consequences of such travel. Upon reentry to US you may be questioned why you visited the country you sought asylum from. If the conditions in your country "drastically improved" after you got the card, then it's probably ok. Otherwise if they "drastically improved" while your greencard application was pending, then your greencard can be revoked.

Check with your attorney. Most attorneys strongly urge against such travel.
