Hello,
If I change my status from F-1 to H-1 here in us,and if I have to travel outside States... can I get the Visa stamped from Canada or do I have to get it only from the home country?

Legally you can (since you were on F1 and earned a US degree) go to any country to get it stamped...however if your applicationis not approved in say Canada/Mexico..you will not be allowed to return to US from there without first getting a visa stamp (which means you will need to go to your home country)

Depending on which is your home country...it may be easier to get it stamped in your home country...my experience..(india/delhi)..
if however you are travelling on official business to say Canada, it is highly unlikely for them to reject stamping..if all papers are in order..

thank you

Thanks for replying...Yes I am also from India..and so Delhi is not that safe kind of consulate to count upon.....actually I recently heard that sometimes they deny your stamping even if your status had been changed! Have you heard something like that?

.

Delhi is the safest consulate in India..as far as I know...the only folks who can be typically denied stamping are those who have H1 from some 'fly by night' bodyshoppers (in IT)..or equivalent in other fields. F to H, otherwise is a pretty straightforward procedure....assuming you have maintained your status..there is no other issue etc...If you have all your paperwork..and are confident..there shouldn't be any problem..He/she is unlikely to spend more than 30 seconds on you..
Let me know if you need more info...you can send me a personal msg..

Thanks Mithya

Thanks a lot Mithya for your reply...I appreciate your input. I hope to finish the degree that I am currently persuing before the residency starts, but am not too sure. So I do not know for sure if I will have a degree from US when i join residency..do you think I can still try to get Visa stamped in Canada?
