Visa Stamping - in Chennai

Hi,

I will be going to India for the first time after getting my H1B Visa in December 2002. I would appreciate any help I could get with regards to some of my concerns:

1. I live in Muscat, Oman and did my schooling there. I spoke to represenative at the US embassy there(in Muscat) and he said it would be OK for me to get my passport stamped in Muscat. I am being overly cautious and want to make an appointment at the Chennai office too.

2. If I have to go to the Chennai office, how long does it take to get my passport back. I have read many different versions of this on websites. Some said it takes 3 days for them to mail the passport back - if that is the case how do I travel back. I need the passport for my flight back to bombay.I have also read stories about some people having to take a fingerprint test and results of which will only be provided after a month or so. I will be in india for only one week.

I hope to hear from you soon.
Thanks, :)
Reeja

Hi,

Thanks a lot for your response "great guru"...but I still have a couple of questions......

1. If i do the stamping at chennai, how will I get my passport to go back to bombay?
2. I am trying to get it done in Muscat, chennai is only on a need basis.
3. Does it really take 3 days to get it done, is there no way to expediate the process?

Please help.

Why do you need passport to go to Bombay???? to go to bombay from chennai you do not need any passport or visa!!!!!!2. I am trying to get it done in Muscat, chennai is only on a need basis.

For chennai you have to get appointment, before Dec 2004 no dates available. Check with Chennai US consulate web page.
In muscat you do not need any appointment, in 1990, I went walk in interview in Muscat (sati al Qurum) . Now you have to check the situation.

Please help.
