Visa revalidation questions

Hi,

I had some questions on visa revalidation and am re-posting them here.

==
I received my I-797 in november and I am thinking about doing the revalidation in SL soon. However, my concern is that the passport will be away from me for 3-4 months and the possibility of it being misplaced. Is there any way to minimise this?
I read here that many people have been revalidating via SL. Is there any 'standard/safe procedure' in mailing to ensure that your passport doesn't get lost? (o/w it can be a BIG hassle)

I was thinking of going to India (Mumbai) around June-end. The last time (may02) I got my H1 stamped there it was a smooth process but I am not so sure now.

Thanks in advance for any replies.

Though this is not strictly related to revalidation -- my CA DMV license is expiring in June. Does anyone know if the passport is required for driver license renewal? (Because I likely won't have it at the time the passport is sent.)

Secondly, does anyone recommend any courier service over others?

Sidharth,

It is safe to send your passport for revalidation. You can use USPS or Fedex. I have revalidated mine twice, both using USPS.
Inorder to ensure that your passport gets to the SL office, the only thing you can do is to sent it by certified mail. Also be careful to include a stamped return envelope for getting your passport back.

If you want to go to India in June and you want to get your passport revalidated here, You should sent it right away. it could be touch and go.

You can get the passport revalidated in India too. I know a person who got it revalidated in chennai just last month.

hope this helps

bye.

thanks

luckyluck,

Thanks for those answers. A stupid question (but just to ensure I understand you) when you say stamped envellope, you mean just a regular envellope with 37c stamp??

Also is there any website that lists the documents requirement or can I assume that http://travel.state.gov/hlop contains valid info?

I just wrote to my attorney and she said that for indian nationals the fee is $175. The DOS website states the fee as $150. Do you know which is correct?

$150 is correct not $175 (this is old fees) ask your attorney they changed the fee and let her check theweb site.

Also you have to put the return postage means it is not 37cents.

Better make sure the return envelope also you will get in Certified mail with that required perpaid postage.

I hope you got the answers, if more you want post it I will answer.

BaSh

BaSh,

Do you have a sample letter of job description along the lines of what DOS wants?

I think I'll go with my company's fedex account for mailing.

another q

BaSh,

Any sample letter?

I looked at the DS156, 157 and it mentions that you need to type or print. I remember filling out these forms by hand the previous time I went to India.

Can I fill these forms by writing or must I fill them by typing?

Thanks for your help so far.

DS156/157 questions

Hi, I got a lot of my doubts answered regarding the DS156/157 questions. Some lingering questions....

DS156:Q36 Has anyone filed immigration petition on your behalf?
I'm in the labour phase. What should I reply to this?

(Keeping in mind the above question) what do I write for
DS156:Q26 How long do you intend to stay in US?

DS157:Q9 List all countries that you have entered in the last 10 years.
I dropped by in Hong Kong for 5 hours during my transit time. Leaving and entering the airport to go the city means I have stamps in my passport for this. Should I mention Hong Kong for this question? (the visa officer would have my passport so they can see the stamps)
If yes, should I mention China or Hong Kong or what?

The DS156 e-form is not flexible for some questions. Can I answer in pen for these? (like when do you arrive in the US - though I am already in the US)
