Visa Number

What is the non-immigrant "visa number" that is required in form I-485?

Is it the RED number written at the bottom-right side of the visa stamp?

Or it is the BLACK number written at the top right side (also designated as "control no") ?

Any of them is fine (you will find contradictory information on the web, including on this forum...).

To check, I called the CIS and the officer I got on the line told me to use the BLACK one Perhaps another one would have told me to use the red one. Earlier in the year, somebody in my lab had called and was answered that either one was ok.

My company's immigration law firm told me that it is the RED one. So that's what I used.
