Visa for my Bosnian Mother-in-Law

Greetings,

I'm a US citizen living in Sarajevo, BiH soon to be married to a Bosnian citizen. After we get married we plan on relocating to the US. Eventually we'd like to have her mother come to visit us. She is a 71 year old widow and we will always be her primary support. Ultimately it would be best if she could just permanently immigrate to the US and live with us....however as I understand it, this process could take a LONG time. I'm hearing 4-5 years at best.

I'd like to know if anyone has any experience and/or knowledge on the subject. I've been doing my research and have learned that it's possible for her to obtain a 10 year/multiple entry visa. This would be perfect....I'd just like to be sure we do everything we need to do to optimize our chances for her visa approval.

Any and all comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,

Z

A VISITOR visa is not for her to live in the USA.

There is nothing she can do to come live in the US with you guys, she'd have to wait until your wife becomes a citizen (3-4 years) and she files for her GC (1 year) and then she would get an immigrant visa to come here.

The 10 year is visitor visa allows usually visits of up to 6 months (though most people stay less than that). One should not spend more than 6 out of 12 months in the USA in any rolling window. She will have a hard time proving ties to her home country to obtain the visa, with her daughter being in the USA and being a widow and all.

Thanks for the quick reply PraetorianXI. I understand what you're saying. We're prepared for it to take as long as 4-6 years. At this point, we'd just like to go for the visitor visa for her. Yes, she is widowed, but she has assets here. She owns two houses in Bosnia, collects a monthly pension and has a significant amount of money in a local bank account. Based on these ties, how do you think she'll fair with obtaining a 10 year visa now?
