Hi everyone:

Am a little confused as to how much one has to pay at the interview, if one has already paid the fees to NVC (mine were paid in March 2005). The total amount is $335(?), but the amount paid to NVC is less than that, I think -- so, the balance is due at the interview?

(At NWD, in addition, one needs to have Rs. 441/- for courier charges to return one's passport).

Any clarification would be greatly helpful.

The new fee including the security fee is $380.00 per applicant.

Since you paid $335.00, you need to pay an extra $45.00 per applicant.

Mumbai website states:

Important Note: All immigrant visa applicants must also pay an additional visa surcharge of US$45 or Rs. 1980 per applicant by bank draft in favor of the American Consulate General, Mumbai, and payable in Mumbai. If you do not bring this bank draft to your interview, your application will be denied and you will have to return on another day when you have obtained the draft.
 
As for paying the courier fee, you do not need to pay any such fee as your passport will be stamped with the Immigrant Visa right then at your interview and your passport handed back to you immediately or you will be asked to come and collect it later the same evening.

That courier fee you are referring to, applies to non-immigrant visa applicants.
 
Thanks for the info. Just saw the fee break up on the chennai consulate's website and I find some conflicting information. Can someone clarify the fees listed below in bold?

Immigrant visa fees must be paid by a demand draft on a nationalized or foreign bank with a Chennai branch in favor of "American Consulate General, Chennai."

For purposes of conversion into Indian Rupees, please use the rate of Rs. 44 per 1 US dollar.

Note: A $65 issuance fee for immigrant visas is due ONLY IF it has not already been paid to the National Visa Center.

Courier Delivery Fees Please bring a demand draft for Rs. 350 plus Rs. 50 for each additional passport, payable to "Blue Dart Express Limited." for the courier delivery fees. We cannot accept cash for this service.

GCChaahiye, thanks for the clarifications. I too think that what will be required is $45 (since, according to my attorney, $335 was paid to NVC).

As to the courier fee: that really varies from consulate to consulate. In Mumbai they might give the passport back the same day on approval. In New Delhi they courier it. The following is from the Embassy's website:

Courier Pass Back of all Immigrant Visas


The U.S. Embassy is pleased to announce that beginning May 3, 2004, all immigrant visas will be returned to the applicants by courier service. The fee for courier service will be Rs. 441 (includes service tax of 10.2%) per applicant. After the interview, the successful applicants are required to contact the TT Services desk in the visa section lobby for courier pass back information and to pay the service charges of Rs. 441 per applicant.

Peter_guest: I'm a little confused by the MDR website stuff as well. What is the $65 visa issuance fee? Can anyone clarify?

Delhi's website simply lists the visa fee as $335+$45 surcharge. It might help checking with Chennai directly. In any case, I'll probably just carry bunches of dollars, cash, just in case ... :) Don't have to worry about drafts and cancelling them if not necessary ...

As to the other things at the end of the list from Chennai, they don't really apply to our situation:

Returning resident fee is for someone who had to reapply for PR status for some reason (such as staying out of the US for too long), I think.

I've no idea what the fingerprinting fee is for. Again, NWD doesn't list any of this ...

visa fee is $380. since you paid $335 before, you may pay the difference by Cash in $$$ at the delhi consulate. My friend did the same last month.

TTK courier service fee may be deposited by cash also in indian rupees.
