Visa extension and denial after i-94 expires

Hi,

My parents I-94 is expiring on Sep 24 and we are thinking of applying extension for 3 months until mid of Dec as we have some religious function in end of November. I am not sure if this will be good reason for visa officer, so we have following questions:
1) How much time is currently taking in Vermont office, site mentioned 2.5 months but some confirmed 1 month so just checking if anyone done recently?
2) If they stay beyond Sep 24 and ext got denied, will the visa will be cancelled as some people mentioned.
3) Will this affect thier GC process that we are planning to apply next year?
4) Any good reference of lawyer so I can call and confirm the questions?

Thanks

A1: Check the I-539 processing time, that would be my best guess
A2: Depends on the officer at the POE, if he/she wants to enforce 222(g)
A3: There is a remote possibility. For example, if the consul wants proof of lawful presense for all previous visits
