Dear all,

My visa expires on 5th Februray 2008. I intend to arrive in US on the 13th of January 2008. Will I have difficulty in acquiring my green card since it would be left with only 3 weeks for my visa to expire, and it takes about six weeks to acquire a green upon arrival? I need help.

About what visa you are talking? Or are talking about the activation of you GC? If you talking about the activation, dont worry, you'll get a stamp in you passport with your permanent residens status (if I remeber right, it is called I-551).

You need to clarify your situation - is this what it is:

You won the DV lottery, and went through CP and were approved for a greencard. The period for entry into the US expires in February, and you are concerned that you need 6 weeks on the entry requirement date because you think the greencard will take 6 weeks to arrive?

If this is right, assuming the greencard itself is only generated upon entry into the US (which I don't think is correct, but someone else will be able to asnwer this, Lucy?), the DV date is only a required entry date, the card itself is a piece of paper, once entered you are a PR.

Someone correct me if I am wrong!

I think you will be just fine. From all the reading I have done, It seems clear to me that the visa you have in your passport is valid for 6 months from when it was issued. As soon as you pass though immigration which must be with in that 6 month window you will get a stamp in your passport.
This stamp can be looked upon as a temporary GC valid for a year, and you can fire away and begin working. Then in the mean time your physical GC will be sent to you.
The time frame for getting this card seems to be any where from 4 weeks to many months, this is dependent on what centre will be processing the actual printing of the GC, as some are busier then others.
So an arrival date of 13th January is perfectly acceptable! congratulations on the CG and good luck in the US! :)
