USPS and USCIS, who is more accountable?

Hi, experts

I received my "Card production ordered." e-mail today, but we are moving to another city at the end of this month. We already asked post office to forward our mail to the new address.

I am not sure should I change my address with USCIS now or wait until we moved in.

Does anybody know in average how long between the "ordered" mail and the card received?

Regards

Sue

It's normally within 2 weeks that you will receive your card after the card production update, however as with many things dealing with immigration you just dont know.

Also there has been some discussion about fowarding of mail sent by USCIS here before. It was mentioned via some memo that forwarding would be allowed but I've heard mixed information. Some people have had it forwarded others have had it returned etc.

With any luck you'll get it before you move.

This is my suggestion

I am sure you know who your regular mailman is. I would try to get hold of him as soon as you see him putting the mail. Introduce yourself to him & give him an envelope with a pre-paid postage (41 cents stamp on it) with the new address you are moving to and request him to drop your green card in the mail as soon as he sees it in the mail. I am sure this way your GC would not be returned back to sender (USCIS).

suzanney, you could also initiate a request to hold all your mail temporarily at the post office, where you can pick it up when you resume your mail delivery (this is usually used for vacation but sounds like a good option to me here!). In my recent experience (my wife moved), a forwarding request can take some time (I think it was about 2 weeks) to take effect, but a hold mail request can be requested almost instantly (we've been submitting our hold requests online, and putting a notice about the hold mail request in our mailbox for the postman). Of course the downside is that all your mail will be held for some time (that you specify).

austriacus , thank you.

I received my welcome notice letter toady. The notice date is March 14th. I keep my finger crossed, hope the card will show up before I move.

Otherwise, I may request a temporary hold of mail for 2 weeks. The good thing is we are not moving out of the state, it is still doable to pickup the mail later.

It is a requirement of law to file an AR 11 form withing 10 days of your move.

plastic card received 2 days before we move

Today the plastic card is finally arrived.

So to benefit whomever have the similar situation now or later, I posted all my findings.

1. USPS have two kinds of forwarding service, one is permanent and the other one is temporary.
- Permanent: free, used when you moving to another place,
- Temporary: with service charge about $10+ a week
! both will NOT forward any mail with "Do not forward" or "Return service requested" stamp.
I reviewed all my immigration letters from USCIS, only the green card letter has "Return Service Requested“ stamp.

2. USPS temporary holding:
if you are not applied for the forwarding service yet, you could ask for a temporary holding of all your mail. Then you could pick up at the post office by yourself. If you are not moving too far away, I believe this is the best bet.

3. Ask the mailman for help.
I tried that. I met the mailman two days earlier before I got my green card. I chatted with him. He told me that very rarely some mail will have the "Do not forward" stamp, but receive a green card is also very rare. He is such a nice guy, and he gave me his cell phone number and told me if I do not receive my green card when I am moving, call him and we will work out a solution then.

I am so lucky the same night I met him in a neighborhood bar AGAIN. He said although the mail said do not forward, he still can put that mail in another envelop and send it to me. So we agreed that if I cannot receive my green card, I will give him an envelop with my new address and stamp.

This way works, but I am so lucky don't need to test by myself.

The funny thing is when I am so happy about received the card in time, I found they screwed up my country of birth information. However, it's better than wrong name.
