Using phone menu to check status of N-400

Hello folks,

Is it possible to use the USCIS phone menu to check the status of my N-400.

I have a receipt # and when I choose options

1-2-2-6-1 it asks you to enter the receipt # which I do, but this provides me with a response "I'm sorry, you did not enter enough digits"

My receipt # includes ESC*XXX XXX XXX

So I enter, *XXX XXX XXX.

Can anyone shed some light on what I may be doing wrong?
