Our interview schedule is in July. My USC husband, who was born in another country, doesn't have a birth certificate. It is listed as a requirement in the interview letter. How big of a problem do we have? What can we present in place of it?

Please help. :(

Even if your USC husband was born in a different country, didn't he get a Consular Report of Birth (FS-240) or Certification of Report of Birth (DS-1350) at the country where he was born? I think in most case, if he has a valid passport, that would be enough. But you can try to get copies of the above forms too since you have time between now and your interview. Check out this website.

Let us know what you decide to do and actually do. Good luck!

The USC sponsor has to show proof of US Citizenship which could be one of the following.

1. US Passport
2. Naturalization Certificate
3. Certificate of birth in US.

One of the above will do. Also, You MUST take the original of whatever from above was submiited with the forms so the officer can verify.

In my case, my wife had submitted a copy of her birth cerfiticate with the application, so the officer wanted to see the original.

Thank you everybody! I guess we'll be bringing his US passport then. A copy of that was the only thing we submitted with our applications. We did not receive RFEs..

Will keep fingers crossed and hope that we are not required to show naturalization cert and birth cert. He was naturalized when he was very young and has lost the certificate. He never had reason to get a copy before this. A duplicate costs $200 btw..
