I understand that the over 21 unmarried child must submit his/her own birth cert, how about the petitioner (the parent)? Does he/she need to submit his/her own birth certificate?

hello

What you need to submit from your sponsor, is Proof of U.S. citizenship that includes an expired U.S. passport, an original birth certificate or naturalization certificate (copies, do not send originals).
In case that your sponsor is a Lawful Permanent Resident: a photocopy of both sides of Resident card.
Good Luck!!!
