Once we get naturalization certificate do we NEED to apply for US passport? If one doesnot wish to travel out of the country for a long time - can we just be ok with the naturalization certificate? Other way to ask my question is - is it ok if after naturalization one does NOT apply for US passport OR is there a rule that says that after naturalization a person HAS to apply for US passport in xx days?

Thanks

Passport is not Required if you are not planning to travel. More than half of US Citizens do not have US Passports.

Certainly there is no requirement to apply for one, but it is easier to prove your citizenship (for employment or whatever) with a passport than carrying that precious natz cert around with you.

i agree with Boatbod.

i am keeping the passport and natz. cert. in seperate locations and one backs up the other if god forbid there is a fire, disaster.

also i have notarized copies of both so that I can show them to bank and school to get citizenship status changed.

No, there is no rule that makes it necessary for you to get a passport after you have naturalized. But if you want to travel outside the country, you will need the passport - if not for anything else at least at the time of re-entry in to the US.

getting rid of USCIS

If you get a passport then you have proof of citizenship independent of USCIS. Otherwise, you have to go back to USCIS and get a naturalization certificate if you lose your original. And we all know how much fun that is gonna be.

With all the delays for passport processing, you are better off applying for one (as soon as you can). Although you might not have any plans, it will be much of a headache to obtain a passport in a hurry, if an emergency should arise.
