Us may eliminate H1 B visas - bill has been passed

What do you mean by "bill has been passed"????
Passed by whom???
Even the title of the article still uses the word "may"!
You have to be careful in the use of 'proposed' vs 'passed'

US may eliminate H1-B visas

The United States may do away with H1-B visas delivering a knockout punch to Indian IT professionals wanting to take up jobs in the US.

A bill moved by right-wing Republican lawmaker Tom Tancredo in the US Congress to eliminate H1-B visas has every chance of being enacted, said sources.

Tancredo, a right-wing Republican lawmaker from Colorado, is known for his vehemently anti-immigration views.

India and Outsourcing: Complete Coverage

The sluggish US economy, the uproar over outsourcing and the rising unemployment rate have fuelled the need for steps to keep American jobs from being lost to countries like India, said senior aides to Tancredo.

The aides, including one who drafted Tancredo's 15-line bill proposing the elimination of all visas allowed under the H1-B category, said that "the high-tech industry itself which fought so hard for the expansion of the number of IT professionals allowed into the country are projecting that the technology job outlook will remain soft and that more jobs will be outsourced overseas to countries like India, so why do we need this category at all."

"It is no secret that American workers in the technology industry are losing their jobs to the upsurge in outsourcing, so the Congressman strongly believes that this category (H1-B) has to be done away with to protect the few American jobs and American workers remaining in this industry," they said.

Not yet passed. It is yet to be introduced to the house. It still needs to be debated , voted and passed, if there no objections.

Still long way to go.

Actually, I support the bill. Its a fact there are tons and tons of US citizen getting laid off and are without jobs. It makes sense to H1 visa in shortage skill areas like nursing, teachers, Pharmacy. But IT no way.
Think for a second if cheap bangladeshi labor comes to India becuase they are cheaper and displace jobs will we Indians welcome them with open arms as americans still are doing. Ultimatley, this country belongs to its citizens. This is not question about immigration but cheap labor. The Indian companies bring in h1bs earn big moolah and pay pittance to the poor IT workers from India. Sometimes this IT workers live 4-5 people in one flat and are paid just living expenses while company earns top dollars.
I fully support this bill. They downgrade computer programming to a blue collar job. The basic requirement of H1 is a job requiring a bachelor's degree. While to do coding you don't need a Bachelor's. I am learning VB just out of fun and an into Pharmacy!!!. Get the point. Computer programmers don't deserve H1 in the first place.

Can somone please stop this ridiculous unfounded rumours? The bill in question, HR2688 was introduced to the House on July 9 and immediately referred to the House Committee on the Judiciary. It is sponsered by Tom Tancredo, and does not even have a co-sponsor, which should tell you a lot about its chances of success. If you want to track the "progress" of this bill, go to http://thomas.loc.gov/. The quality of information on this forum seems to get worse every day.

The person who wrote "Ultimatley, this country belongs to its citizens"is hopelessly naive. It belongs to the 1% who own it.

gc131,
You don't know when to take things literally and when not to. This is also called as reading in between the lines. I am not talking about Land or ownership but right to present bills and decide what is wrong and what is right. Just like parents do but yet they don't own their children( Unless you come from medival society where women are owned by men, like, PAK or TALIBAN)

People,
Just an FYI...this is the same republican lawmaker who moved the congress to reduce the number of H1s granted each year (the H1 quota), and the congress rejected this motion.

So rest assured, this will probably get rejected as well. There are a lot of "silly" laws/bills that are introduced in Congress that do not see the light of day !

So relax and dont worry.......

It is practically will have NO effect

People are going back to India. And H1B quota is not filled ( means there is no hiring over here )

More over Companies are 'packing' to offshore :D:D

Senators should be shown the movie
" Catch me if you can " :D:D

Media blew it out of proportion

Rediff has a track record of making mountains out of mole hills. Especially on controversial topics such as these. A bill does not become a law until it clears both houses and gets signed by the President. It can get vetoed even at the Presidential level. Tom Whats-his-name can introduce (*thanks to gc131 for pointing out the error*) bills at will, it doesn't mean they will all become laws. They find a better use as TP!!

Without a mention of all this, Rediff appears to have garnered some publicity. Rest of them numbnuts followed suit.

There have been 100's of such bills thats have been introduced over the past few years and later rejected.....

I don't see any reason to worry.

Thanks,

All Bills are in the hands of corporate America related to Tech,Auto,Construction, Steel.. .. Not to worry they wont pass the bill to eliminate but as per the economic conditions they might reduced the existing quota.

How indian politicains get funds ? Same here a sort of....

There is an outcry among ppl here but the statistics looks entirely different as the no of ppl getting immigrated is from MEX ,IND, CHN, PHI, VTNM in the order ....

this bill is never going to be passed.
indians here start this kind of rumors but in reality they are fools,
