US GC Holder Applying for Canadian PR

Guys and Gurus,
I have unique situation, one of my friends is a US GS holder and for some reason s he wants to apply for Canadian PR also while having US GC. He consulted with some lawyer and was being told that if he applies for Canadian PR he will lost his US GC status and will be banned from entering US for the next 10 years.

Can any body guide me as how much truth in this statement, I think that one can apply for Canadian PR while on US GC without any problems.

Taking up Canadian PR may send a signal that the applicant has abondoned his US PR status. The applicant will not be banned for 10 years!!!
