When I had my interview, I got the letter saying I passed the English & Civic test, however a decision can’t be made at this time. I asked the officer if I could provide more info or documents and he said no. The reason he told me is because on INS record it shows that I have two Alien numbers.
which was one from my previous case I-687(work permit) Then in 2001 I got married to a US citizen during my Green card interview the INS officer asked me what about your previous I-687 case then my lawer submitted the paper work told the officer that case needs to be closed. which the Green card Interview officer did not close. As far as my marriage case all the paper work are in order.INS officer told me in order to grant me the Citizenship he has to look at my previous I-687 workpermit case and close it and he will notify me via mail. Did any of you had this type of situation. please reply.

Yes, the double A number issue has been posted quite often. It is not very unusual. However, I understand it is unnerving because it becomes an undetermined delay.

Having two (or more) A numbers results in you having multiple files. If these files do not all arrive in time for the interview, the only possible outcome is one like yours. I wouldn't worry too much - it usually takes a couple of months to resolve, but at least its not like a namecheck black hole.

i am very confused about people posting about issues with two A numbers. i was an asylee for a few years before i got married and then reapplied for green card through marriage. but at that time i kept, wrote and used my initial A number. when the time for green card interview came the officer who interviewed us could not make a decision before she could get and go through my asylum paperwork. it took a long time to the point i had contacted the local congressman for help. afterwards i believe it took 3 weeks for me to get the approval letter for green card. this all said to point out i did not change the A number when i filed for green card. never became an issue.

Yeserday when I joined this forum I did'nt know were to start,Here is the detail summary of my issue.I had my interview done on Feb20-2008, My previous case was a work Authorization which I have obtained during the Amnesty of 1987 (LULAC, CSS) during that time people told me that I can get my grrencard in 6 months time which never happened and then I got married to a US citizen in 2001.During my Green card interview the IO asked me and my lawyer what about my previous case,my lawyer gave some paperwork and told the IO that that old case needs to be closed. The interview went fine. However a decision could not be made. The IO of my citizenship interview told me that all my marriage case paper work is in order onlything he has to locate my previous case and close it,which the Greencard officer did not close.which will take 2 weeks time he said. He said wait for the mail from INS.Question is will my old amnesty case will create any problems? Did anyone else experinced similar situation.
Please reply.

While we are not IO but usually in dual A file cases (Such as yours) the second A file is required so that all information can be consolidated into one file and marked as "closed". I have not heard them going through each document from second A file unless they have some reasons to do so. Add to that your interview was fine and your current file seems satisfactory. I even doubt they have time to go through each paper from the regular file itself.

While I would also get worried like you (And I was since I also had 2 A files, that I came to know during the interview) let me say that it will mostly be fine and within few weeks, you will be all set.
Let us know after 2-3 weeks when you hear from IO.

It wasn't a dual A-number issue. They simply must have forgotten to gather and review your asylum paperwork before the interview.

Asylum?!
The poster says he got amnesty! not asylum. There is a big difference.
Amnesty was given to people who were illegally in the country. The year was 1986 not 1987 as the poster claims.
But the poster says he did not get a a green card in 1987 amnesty but a workpermit.
How is it possible that he stayed in the country from 1987 to 2001 with the work permit he claims he got in 1987?
Then he got married to a citizen in 2001.
In 2001 there might have been a rule where if you got married to a citizen and were in the country illegally you were allowed to stay. Let the poster shed some light on this.

Thank You N400Atl
Did you have same case as mine?

My case was not similar to yours though I had 2 A files. I came here on L-1 visa and then switched to H-1 then GC. That caused 2 A files it seems.

Good luck and let us know how it goes. Information you post helps people who may be in same situation as you are.
