Hi we have got a proposal for my cousin sister from Indian who is staying in US for 11 yrs and working as goods receiver in retail chain.

He has come on vacation now and wants to marry my sister and go back to US, he also says he will take her to US in 6-8 Mnths time. Please let me know how long will it take for a citizen to take his spouse to US after marriage. Also what Kind of VISA does my Sister has to avail.

Either can come on fiancee visa before marriage.

After marriage she will have to go for a interview at the consulate to get (what I belive is the provisional Green card). This may take 6-18 mos.

Alren Thanks for the reply. But why does it require 18 months..and what is the normal average time frame required to get Provisional GC.

-thanks

Thanks Joe. Appreciate your help. So My cousin sis has to wait for 18 months to get into US by default what ever the case. But as Alern said which are the cases where things get done in 6 Mnths. I know I am asking too many questions so Shall I take 18 Mnts as minimum time where My cousin has to wait for the Visa Processing.

-Thanks

That's the normal I-485 processing time. USCIS is that slow :( Actually, 18 months is rather fast. The times were over 2 years not too long ago.
That is the normal timeframe. In such a marriage case, btw, the GC is called "Conditional". The conditions have to be removed after 2 years of marriage.
Actually the 2 year time frame might still hold true. I was just giving a 6mo-1.5 yrs ball park figure.

Thanks joe, "conditional" was the word I was looking for.

USCIS/BCIS/INS is predictabilly unpredictable. So if things are in your favour, it might proceed faster and 6mo. might (again might) be possible. But then ....

Thanks again Alren, any recent instance what was the time involved as you noticed. To get I 485 from scratch.

Marriage based green cards are processed at the district office (in Maryland, they are filed with the service center but quickly transferred to the district office) and the processing times are much different and very variable. Check the USCIS for processing times.
