US citizen filing for parents and minor sibling

Hello,

I am a naturalized US citizen. I am starting the process to apply for green cards for my parents. My sister is 17 years old. I wanted to know if she would qualify as their dependent as she is less than 21. Would that mean a faster processing time for her, as compared to a decade or so for a sibling.

thank you!

She would NOT qualify as a dependent of your parents. You will have to apply for her separately as sibling of US citizen and there is several years of waiting.

I thought anyone under 18 years is a dependent. Hmmmm....please check again on the website .....she should be a dependant still but the problem is this process can take upto a year, minimum 6-8 months if things go really fast and smooth and if by then she turns 18, it could be a problem. Maybe one of the seniors will pitch in and give you a more accurate answer.

For categories which allow adding dependents, the cutoff is 21 years old. But people immigrating as parents of US citizens are not allowed to add dependents to their petitions.

However, after your parents get their own GCs, they could petition for your sister who would still be under 21, and thus eligible for the F2A category (under-21 unmarried children of permanent residents). That category has a wait of about 2 years.
