urgent query abt. status and GC

My family-based I-485 is pending (based on marriage to US citizen). I'd entered the U.S. on a J-1 visa, which expired Dec. 2002 (and which I did not renew as it is a non-immigrant visa that would be voided by an I-485 application). Is there reason to refrain from travelling at this time, given my out- of-status situation, despite having a valid AP document (I also have a valid EAD)? I am concerned as I'd planned to attend my sister's wedding in the UK this Feb., and just read posts on this website alerting me to the grave risks of doing so.
Thanks in advance for any advice.

Did you apply for an I485 before your J-1 status expired??
If the answer to that is yes then you are in status and can travel outside the United States for a temporary period.

Admitting you back into the US regardless of your status is solely on the Immigration Officer at your port of entry.

I guess you should be allright regarding your travel. I would also re-confirm it with an immigration officer at your local INS district office.

Good look

Thank you for your response. Yes, I did apply for my I-485 before my J-1 expired. The lawyer I recently consulted told me pretty much what you'd just said. He told me to bring *all* my documentation with me on the trip so that I can present my case confidently at the border upon return.
Good wishes to you.
